Porcelain Cat

“Porcelain Cat” is a work of hope and resilience of heritage. Rue, a Korean American living in Puerto Rico, keeps the traditional patterns that she saw on her grandparents' porcelain growing up relevant by reimagining them on a cat, a cultural symbol of modern life in Puerto Rico. Through unexpected and striking visuals, Rue comments on the meritorious and detrimental aspects of her own personal values, the values of her local geographical society, and those of her historical ancestry. Painted on the cat are four traditional flower motifs found in historical east asian porcelain that carry the double symbolism of the seasons and qualities of noble character. Together, they are known as the “Four Gentlemen".
